Red and infrared light therapy — photobiomodulation — uses specific wavelengths of light that penetrate tissue and act on mitochondria, supporting cellular energy production, tissue repair and reduced inflammation. What is red and infrared light therapy?

Photobiomodulation exposes the body to precise red (visible) and near-infrared (invisible, deeper-penetrating) wavelengths. These are absorbed by chromophores in the mitochondria — chiefly cytochrome c oxidase — nudging cellular energy production upward and signalling repair pathways. It is painless, non-thermal at clinical doses, and among the best-studied of the newer physical therapies.

Red vs near-infrared

Red wavelengths act mainly at the skin and superficial tissue; near-infrared penetrates deeper — muscle, joint and, at some wavelengths, bone. SOMA's protocols select wavelength and dose for the target tissue rather than using one generic setting.

How does SOMA use light therapy?

As a repair-and-recovery tool within wider protocols: supporting tissue healing and pain reduction in chronic pain and injury, recovery in athletic programmes, and skin and inflammatory conditions where testing supports it. Dose, frequency and duration are physician-set — light therapy follows the protocol, it isn't sold by the session.

Who is light therapy suitable for?

Most adults tolerate photobiomodulation well, which makes screening simple but still mandatory — photosensitising medication, certain skin conditions and active malignancy are among the exclusions a SOMA physician checks. Suitability and the treatment plan come from your consultation, not from the device menu.

What happens during a session?

Common questions

Photobiomodulation has a substantial research base for tissue repair, pain and inflammation, with effects tied to correct wavelength and dose. Results depend on using clinical-grade equipment at therapeutic doses — which is why SOMA delivers it inside physician-set protocols rather than as a standalone gadget session.

At clinical doses it is non-invasive, painless and well tolerated. Screening covers photosensitising medications and other exclusions, and eye protection is used where appropriate. It is one of the gentlest therapies SOMA offers.

Benefits accumulate: most protocols run two to five sessions weekly across several weeks, set by your physician for the target tissue and reviewed by response. One-off sessions rarely produce lasting change.
